A practical approach

Training that fits your operation

Forklift training is not simply a box-ticking exercise. The type of truck, the operator's previous experience, the loads being handled and the working environment all matter.

From busy distribution warehouses to outdoor storage yards, each operation has its own requirements. Employers need to make sure their forklift operators receive suitable training and can demonstrate competence.

Tell us which trucks your operators use, their experience and your business location. We can discuss the training options available and confirm the arrangements before you book.

Training options

What type of training?

Training requirements vary depending on your operators' experience, the type of forklift truck and the tasks they carry out. Here are four common training needs.

01 / GETTING STARTED

Novice Operator Training

Designed for people with little or no previous experience. Basic training covers essential truck controls, pre-use checks, load handling, stability, manoeuvring and safe operating principles.

02 / EXISTING EXPERIENCE

Experienced Operator Training

For operators who already have practical experience but need their knowledge and skills assessed. The appropriate training will depend on their experience, previous instruction and current competence.

03 / KEEPING SKILLS CURRENT

Refresher Training

Refresher training or reassessment may be appropriate after time away from operating, changes to work, an incident or where unsafe habits are observed. Employers should regularly monitor competence.

Forklift Operator Training & HSE Guidance

The HSE's Approved Code of Practice, L117: Rider-operated lift trucks, Operator training and safe use, describes three important stages of training:

Basic Training
The fundamental knowledge and practical skills required to operate a lift truck safely.
Specific Job Training
Instruction for the equipment, loads, tasks and operating conditions associated with the job.
Familiarisation Training
Applying those skills in the actual workplace under suitable supervision.

There is no statutory UK forklift driving licence and no automatic legal three-year certificate expiry. Employers should monitor performance and arrange further training when needed.

Frequently asked questions

Forklift training FAQs

Some of the most common questions businesses ask when looking into forklift operator training.

Do you need training to drive a forklift in the UK?

Yes. Employers must ensure operators have received adequate training and are competent to use the relevant lift truck safely in their workplace.

Is there an official forklift driving licence?

There is no statutory UK forklift driving licence equivalent to a road driving licence. Training records and certificates can provide evidence of training, but employers must still assess competence and authorise operators to use equipment at work.

How often is refresher training needed?

There is no fixed legal interval at which training certificates expire. HSE guidance notes that employers may choose regular reassessment, for example every three to five years, but operators may need further training sooner depending on their performance or changes in work.

Can experienced operators receive additional training?

Yes. Operators with experience may still need formal training, assessment, refresher instruction or conversion training depending on their existing skills and the equipment they use.

Can training be arranged at our premises?

On-site arrangements depend on the type of training, the provider, and whether your premises and equipment are suitable. Tell us your preferred location and we can confirm which options may be available.

What forklift categories can training cover?

Training can be specific to different types of equipment, such as counterbalance lift trucks, reach trucks and powered pallet trucks. Please tell us which types you use so that available options can be checked.

Is ELEV8's training accredited?

The training provider, applicable accreditation and certificate details must be confirmed for each proposed course before booking. Please enquire with the equipment and course details you need.
